There are Facebook pages, people are writing that they are solo travelers and their bios of their social media. But what is it? What is solo traveling? There is still a lot of confusion for people who have not actually done solo traveling.

Many think it’s lonely travel. It’s like someone is roaming around the world like a retard without having any human connection. Some think it is very courageous, and it is very boring. Some think it’s cool. But solo traveling is none of that.

Solo traveling can very simply be defined in plain, simple terms. It’s leaving your house alone without anyone you already know to travel. That you go out to travel for one day, one month, or a few years without anyone you already know.

And having a theme and curiosity, something that should pull you to travel, that is the reason you are going out. That theme, that curiosity is so important that you are willing to go without anyone you already know.

So you’re not traveling with your friend, your family, or your partner. It’s just you with you embracing the unknown.

A simple example of solo traveling is you going and exploring a Sunday in your own town, trying to go to places that you have not seen in your own city all by yourself. That is a very simple experience of solo traveling.

There is no social baggage in solo traveling, no judgment at all. It’s you and you at places where nobody knows you. So you can do whatever you want. That is solo traveling. The freedom to be whatever you want to be without any expectation, that is solo traveling. It is about letting go.

When you solo travel, when you are by yourself in new places, you look at things with fresh eyes. If you are someone from Mexico and you go to say Russia, totally different cultures, different geography, different food and when something new is all around you and you are by yourself, you look at things with very fresh eyes. Meeting new people is solo traveling. Forming short intense relationships and accepting letting go of them, that is solo traveling.

When I was traveling a few years ago in Azerbaijan, I met a Italian guy and we walked through Baku city for 10 kilometers and then hitchhiked to cross over a small part of the Caspian Sea and spent the day on a secluded beach and then we came back the same day and after two days he left and I have not seen him till now and I can still very clearly remember that he saying goodbye to me, we hugging because we had a very intense experience that day and then he just vanishing into the crowd.

Yeah we are in touch on Facebook but you know Facebook social media is not real relationship but that one day I spent with that guy was a very short intense relationship.

Learning that your life is your story, you are the only permanent entity in your story, rest everything is moving, that is solo traveling. In real sense self-discovery happens when you are traveling solo, you are forced to accept yourself, and there is no escaping.

If you are sitting on a beautiful beach and you are thinking about some nonsense which happened a few years ago, that is self-discovery, that’s when you will question why are you thinking about the past when you are at such a beautiful place.

Solo traveling will help you discover parts of yourself that you never thought existed. How much capable you are to be a good human being when you don’t have any baggage, when you don’t have any expectations of your office, your spouse, your family, your society, you will be able to experience that only in solo traveling.
